DHA Grants Initial Approval for UAE’s First Proton Therapy Centre in Dubai
Dubai: The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has granted initial approval to Yas Healthcare, a subsidiary of Das Holding, to establish the UAE’s first proton therapy centre in Dubai. This development marks a significant step in advancing cancer care in the region. The facility is anticipated to be completed by late 2028, with construction commencing in early 2026.
According to Emirates News Agency, this will be the first dedicated centre in the UAE to offer proton therapy, a precise form of radiation therapy that accurately targets tumours while sparing healthy tissue. The treatment is particularly beneficial for paediatric cancers and tumours near sensitive organs.
Dr. Alawi Alsheikh-Ali, Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority, emphasized the leadership’s commitment to positioning Dubai as a leader in healthcare. He stated that the proton therapy centre will enhance patient care by offering specialized treatment and improving access to care, aligning with Dubai’s goal of ranking among the top cities globally for healthy life expectancy.
Proton therapy, known for its precision, minimizes side effects and is effective for paediatric cancers and complex tumour sites. The Yas Proton Therapy Centre will provide regional patients access to this treatment, reducing the need for overseas travel.
The project will be developed in collaboration with the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), a leading authority in oncology. NCCS will serve as the consultant, offering clinical and technical expertise for the facility’s design and implementation.
Dr. Mohamad Zaki, Medical Director and General Manager of Yas Healthcare, highlighted the increasing cancer diagnoses and the benefits of proton therapy. He noted that the centre aims to improve accessibility and reduce treatment costs.
Dr. Michael Wang, Chair of the Division of Radiation Oncology at NCCS, expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing the introduction of advanced technology to redefine cancer treatment in the GCC.
The facility’s development aligns with the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031, the Dubai Social Agenda 33, and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aim to enhance quality of life and health outcomes. Dubai’s Medical Tourism Vision seeks to attract over 500,000 international patients annually by 2025.
Construction is set to begin in early 2026, with the centre expected to be operational by the end of 2028. Yas Healthcare will provide updates on the project’s progress and patient enrolment through its official platforms.
