EU Rules Setting Limits on AI Use Go into Force
Brussels: New requirements for regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) went into force in the European Union on Sunday with the implementation of the EU AI Act. The legislation introduces stringent measures to control AI applications that may exploit human vulnerabilities, including the use of subliminal techniques and social scoring, practices notably observed in countries like China.
According to Emirates News Agency, the EU AI Act aims to harness the potential of AI systems to deliver societal benefits, stimulate economic growth, and bolster EU innovation and global competitiveness. However, the regulation also highlights the importance of mitigating “new risks related to user safety, including physical safety, and fundamental rights.” By setting these limits, the EU seeks to create a balanced approach that promotes technological advancement while safeguarding public welfare and individual rights.
