Henna Inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List


ABU DHABI: The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the successful inscription of Henna on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition marks Henna as one of the most ancient and enduring elements of cultural heritage in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting its historical significance and role in contemporary rituals and ceremonies.

According to Emirates News Agency, the UAE’s participation in UNESCO’s 19th Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held earlier this month in Asunción, Paraguay, was pivotal in achieving this milestone. The UAE delegation, led by Ambassador Ali Al Haj Al Ali, Permanent Delegate of the UAE to UNESCO, was instrumental in the decision to inscribe Henna onto the UNESCO list, reflecting the commitment to preserving Emirati and Arab heritage.

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, emphasized the significance of this achievement, noting
that it underscores the deep cultural bonds among Arab nations and the shared legacy of profound cultural heritage. He highlighted the UAE’s dedication to safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage, recognizing its value as the foundation of national identity.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, remarked on Henna’s evolution from its medicinal origins to a cherished symbol of joy and artistry in community celebrations. He stressed that the inclusion aligns with broader strategic goals to promote and protect Emirati traditions globally, with ongoing efforts to implement safeguarding measures.

The UAE, collaborating with the Ministry of Culture and Youth and supported by ALECSO, led the Henna nomination file. The joint Arab effort included 16 regional countries, focusing on the role of heritage in sustainable development and shared human experiences. This recognition marks the 16th element inscribed on behalf of the UAE since 2010, showcasing its ongoing commitment to cultural prese
rvation.
