UAE and Canada Strengthen Ties During Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed’s Visit to Ottawa


Ottawa: The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, hosted H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his visit to Canada from June 19 to 20, 2025. The visit reinforced the shared commitment of Canada and the UAE to enhance bilateral cooperation in various sectors including trade, investment, innovation, and regional peace and security.



According to Emirates News Agency, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with the Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, to discuss the growing ties between the two nations. On behalf of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, Sheikh Abdullah extended an invitation to Prime Minister Carney to visit the UAE this year.



The visit highlighted the intent of both countries to explore new opportunities for cooperation with a focus on economic ties. The launch of the Dubai Chambers office in Toronto was welcomed as a strategic platform to foster deeper commercial relations. This initiative is part of the Dubai Global initiative and aims to strengthen economic ties with Canada.



Both nations acknowledged the role of the Canada-UAE Business Council in developing business opportunities and advancing economic objectives. They expressed their commitment to conclude negotiations for a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) swiftly.



In the realm of artificial intelligence, both countries recognized the significant potential for collaboration. Canada, with its dynamic AI ecosystem, and the UAE, a global leader in AI, reaffirmed their interest in working together in this critical domain.



On water issues, both countries emphasized the importance of international cooperation and highlighted the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE, as a key opportunity to advance global water efforts.



In energy and natural resources, Canada and the UAE reiterated their commitment to advancing energy security and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. They emphasized the importance of dialogue on joint initiatives in decarbonization and other energy sectors.



On international peace and security, both countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to addressing geopolitical challenges and condemned all acts of terrorism. They emphasized the need for dialogue and adherence to international law to resolve conflicts, particularly in the Middle East.



Canada and the UAE are using the Joint Committee for Cooperation as a platform to advance collaboration in priority areas such as trade, investment, and climate. They also underscored their commitment to international development cooperation and humanitarian efforts.



The visit also celebrated the deepening people-to-people ties between Canada and the UAE, with an emphasis on cultural exchange and intercultural dialogue. The two sides reaffirmed their strong relationship and their commitment to a partnership that delivers tangible benefits and contributes to global peace and prosperity.
