DUBAI: President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the United Republic of Tanzania stressed the importance of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in addressing climate change issues, pointing out that her country is losing 2-3% of its GDP due to climate change.
In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the Conference, Hassan said that the indicators show the scale of the crisis facing the planet due to climate change, ‘We must unite, work, and achieve results, in terms of climate financing, operationalising the Loss and Damage Fund and making it accessible to developing countries,’ she urged.
President Samia continued, ‘In Tanzania, we are doing our part to address climate change, and we are working through COP28 to mobilise the necessary support and resources in our battle against the repercussions of climate change.’
The President of Tanzania explained that during the COP15 in Copenhagen, it was pledged to provide around $100 billion annually for climate action, and so far these fig
ures have not been achieved.
She continued, “In the COP21 in Paris, we committed to keeping the Earth’s temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius, but the current warming rate is still a source of serious concern,” considering that non-compliance with previous commitments and pledges will lead to a lack of trust, which will have “serious consequences” for developing countries.
She mentioned that the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that current adaptation options will be less effective with rising global warming temperatures, noting, “We all need to do our part by committing and advancing the climate action agenda.”
